Reclaim Your Table, Feed Your Joy!
You’ve been told to follow the Mediterranean diet. But you’re not from the Mediterranean.
NOW WHAT?
Eating to Heal does not require you to abandon your table.
Join us for an interactive, heart-to-heart evening about food, culture, women’s health and what happens after you’ve been given the medical advice - but still have to figure out how to live it.Thursday, October 1 • 7:00–9:00 PM
Palais Noir • Ajax, Ontario

Your doctor gave you the recommendation.
But did anyone show you how to bring it home?Maybe you’ve heard:Follow the Mediterranean diet.Lose some weight.Cut back on carbs.Watch your cholesterol.Eat healthier. But you still have a family to feed.A partner with favourite meals.Parents who may need your care.Children or grandchildren coming through the door.Church. Work. Appointments. Responsibilities. And a life that is already full. You do not need another eating plan that requires you to cook one meal for yourself and another for everybody else.So let’s start with a different question:

What do you already eat?
What foods feel like home? What flavours do you love? What can realistically work in your life? The medical principles are valuable. The translation is what's missing.
I will help you bridge the gap between medical advice and YOUR real table.
You don’t have to change your culture to fit the prescription.
Daal, callaloo, yams, congee, gai lan, Congo peas, breadfruit, provisions, rice and peas, curries, soups and stews don’t suddenly become unhealthy because they aren’t listed on your practitioner’s recommended diet.Often, they’re simply unfamiliar to the standard nutritional protocols many practitioners are taught. So instead of asking:
“What do I have to stop eating?”

we’ll ask:How can I make my cultural plate more anti-inflammatory?What might I prepare differently? How do I make this work with my actual schedule? How do I make one meal my family can share instead of cooking separately for myself?Learn how to use YOUR food in a way that feels familiar, but still healing and sustainable.
Your culture isn’t the problem.
The protocol simply was not written with your culture in mind.
Ready to Reclaim Your Table?
But food is only half the conversation.
We already know that the “standard” protocol doesn’t tell YOUR whole story?

Heart disease, diabetes and other chronic conditions do not always show up the same way in every woman.Yet much of the medical research used to shape standards, symptom expectations and treatment protocols historically did not adequately represent women.Women from racialized communities have often been even less represented.
That matters. Not because we should distrust our doctors. But because we should understand enough about our own bodies to participate more fully in the conversation.During our evening together, we’ll begin asking:
Could some health risks or early warning signs show up differently in women from my racial or ethnic background? Was someone like me adequately represented in the research behind the standards being used to assess my health?Which numbers should I actually understand instead of simply hearing, “Everything looks fine”?
What should I not automatically dismiss as stress, aging or menopause?Because sometimes one of the most useful things you can walk into your doctor’s office with is:
the right question.
Reclaim Your Table, Feed Your Joy! is about becoming a more informed participant in your own care.
When was the last time you thanked your body?
Women are so often taught to begin with criticism. My belly is too big.Why is my body changing? Why can’t I get this under control? For a few minutes during our evening, we are going to change the language.Kiran will guide you through a gentle body-gratitude meditation - not to ignore real health concerns, but to begin caring for ourselves from a different place.Instead of asking:
“Why does my body look or feel like this?”
we’ll pause long enough to say:
“Thank you, body, for all you’ve carried me through.”

Caring for your health should not require you to become culturally unrecognizable.
Then this conversation is for you.Bring your mother.
Bring your sister.
Bring your aunty.
Bring your girlfriends.Bring the woman who is always taking care of everyone else.Come ready to talk.Come ready to share stories.

Meet Your Guide: Kiran Bissoon
Award-winning Ayurvedic therapeutic nutritionist, anti-inflammatory foods chef and joy-health coach.
Kiran’s work begins where the medical appointment often ends.Your healthcare team may give you the diagnosis, medical plan and recommendations.

But afterwards, you still have to go home and live. What do you cook? What do you change? What can you keep? What is realistically sustainable for you?And how do you make those recommendations work within your culture, your family, your schedule and your real life?Kiran helps bridge that gap by translating therapeutic nutrition and lifestyle principles into practical, culturally relevant ways of eating and living.
After the diagnosis and the medical plan, she helps answer: Now what?
